What can Business Learn from a Successful Marriage?
This weekend my Sister and her Husband celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. I again am wondering what lessons we can take from this amazing achievement and apply to business. Here’s a couple thoughts…. Do you have any others?
- Give and Take --- sometimes you get your way and sometimes you don’t. Businesses make tough choices too! Which product to launch? Which system initiative to proceed with first? Who gets raises? How much? Lots of compromising – in marriage and business.
- Persistence – Especially when starting out in both a marriage and a business there are times when it’d be super easy to throw in the towel. Somedays it’s hard to get up in the morning to go to work … somedays it’s hard to even talk to your spouse after a bad argument or disagreement. Both must keep moving forward!
- Negotiating Skills – My Sister and her Husband had 3 kids in diapers at the same time, 3 kids in high school at the same time and now 3 kids all running their own businesses. How many times did they have to negotiate with what to spend money on or who got to use the car or now who gets help running errands? Negotiating with employees, vendors, customers and even spouses is a skill that is needed in any successful venture.
- Budgeting and Paying Taxes – Need I say more? There’s only so much money to go around and it’s never easy deciding how to spend a finite amount of cash. School supplies, groceries, gas, rent and/or mortgage payments and those darn taxes … Businesses too must budget wisely to ensure they can survive for 50 years and beyond.
Congratulations to my Sister and Brother-In-Law on this major milestone in their lives. May they have more years of Partnership and success.
